karaoke commute

[ FAQ : REQUESTS : ARCHIVE : CURRENT COMMUTE ]

1.
Why are they all so out of date?
I was on placement between June 1999 - August 2000, during which time I recorded these karaokes. You can now catch up with me on my main Student House site.
2.
Why can't I see this marvellous stuff?
On 17th March, I switched to Windows Media, for streaming. Go here to download the player. For any of the archive pieces before then, you need RealPlayer G2 or above installed. Download it from here - look for the thing saying "RealPlayer Basic is our free player." Then come back!
3.
Why on earth did you do this?
It used to pass the time, while sitting in London Commuter traffic. Got bugger all else to do, so why not? :)
4.
What sort of car were you driving?
It looks like this. It's a 1987 Peugeot 205, in Toyota Pearl Blue. It looks like a GTi, but is actually a 954cc scooter on 4 wheels. It has the following faults: leaky sunroof, broken wing mirror, loud squeaky fan, defunct brakes (I know!), manual choke that keeps coming out, both front seats do not go back properly, the seats are ripped, scratched paintwork, 'push down-able' windows, windscreen wiper goes off end of windscreen, oil leaks in 3 places, defunct petrol gauge, awful clutch noise when pulling away with high revs.... and the list goes on.
5.
What sort of stereo equipment do you have on board?
Nothing too flash. A Sony bottom-of-the-range CD / Tuner, and 4 Pioneer speakers.
6.
How long did the commute actually last?
In the morning, it used to take less than an hour (about 50 minutes), but in the evening, when I record the karaoke, the commute was often 2 hours or more.
7.
Why didn't you do it live for the whole journey?
There's a lot of reasons why not, from the simplest being I don't have a 12V power outlet in my car, to the most complicated being a high speed GSM Network/phone which don't exist yet in order for it to work - not to mention programming the laptop to cope with line drops and so on.
8.
You seem to leave work at 4:00pm sometimes... are you a skiver?
No! My working hours were 7:00am - 4:00pm
9.
How is it all actually done?
It's quite simple really. Before I set off on the journey, I plug a 3Com USB HomeConnect camera into my 266MHz Laptop, tweak the lighting settings and let Windows Media Encoder do the rest. The footage is *never* edited - it's started/stopped in the car at the time you see! It saves time messing about in the evening, when I'd rather be eating my dinner and watching some soap opera or other.
10.
Can I make a request?
Not any more on here, as the commute has now stopped and I am back at university - where you can still see me live on cam at my student house. Karaoke is being considered one of the features to be on there, so stay tuned!
